Pharaoh Hounds – Feb. 18 / no.2
Just a few words to mark the passing of HRH Prince Henrik of Denmark on 13th February, aged 83.He was French by birth (Henri Laborde de Monpezats) and Consort to HM Queen Margrethe II, and it is widely reported that he wanted to be titled King as a ‘deed of equality’. Henrik had many hobbies and interests including cooking, winemaking and poetry. In the 1970’s he also developed a keen interest in Pharaoh Hounds and became the owner of a bitch, Ryttergaardens Nefrit. Jette Hansen who had imported both parents from England, bred Nefrit. The sire was Merymut Sinuhe (by two ‘Kilcroney’ Pharaohs) and the dam, Birling Pingo, was originally imported from Malta by Lionel Hamilton-Renwick. The litter was born October 1973.
Nefrit was duly mated with a Maltese import, (Dk.Ch. Starky), and had a litter of 3 dogs and 4 bitches in September ’76. One of the dogs, ‘Tutankhamon’ was owned by Pia Wright and became a ‘World’ Champion and was also the progenitor of her successful ‘Fallohide’ line of Pharaohs which became well-known throughout Europe.
I’m unable to say whether HRH Henrik kept a puppy for himself but his younger son Prince Joachim, did own a Norwegian-bred bitch, Nefer Av Earto in the late ‘80s.
At the time of writing, Pia is due to have an operation and so we send her sincere good wishes for a speedy recovery from all her Pharaoh Friends.
