Gill Grainger and Whicheeta Celtic Connection who had a good day at Langstone Premier Open Show winning BOB under judge Kim Lathaen and then topping that with Group 2, Best Veteran in Group under judge Howard Ogden who also awarded her Best Veteran in Show.
Kirsty Miller & Evan Ryan had a lovely day at Bakewell Open Show where Flanagan Energizer at Feorlig (IMP SVK) won Best AVNSC Terrier Puppy and the Terrier Puppy Group under Nick Gourley (Witchstone) and then went on to win Reserve Best Puppy in Show under Mr T J H Richards (Sheridel).
Back in 1998 an annual competition began specifically for Junior Warrant winners to compete against each other for the coveted title of ‘The Kennel Club Junior Warrant Winner of the Year‘ award. Each year, there is a series of qualifying heats at Open Shows held by General Canine Societies around the country, during June, July and August. These are held after all of the Open Show judging including BIS etc has been completed.
At each heat, four dogs and two reserves are selected by the judge and 64 dogs from the heats are then invited to the Semi Finals at Discover Dogs at ExCeL London. At Discover Dogs the dogs are exhibited in the main ring in two groups simultaneously and from this, the judges select the ten finalists to go on and compete at the Grand Final which is held at Crufts, the following March.
To gain a Junior Warrant in our breed is an achievement in itself and 2 Skyes owners have gained that title during 2018/19. One being myself with Ch Verumamicus Aurora of Brakemill JW. Alfreton & District Canine Society held a heat of the JW qualifying classes and was judged by Mrs Lyn Salt. There was a very large entry of 52 dogs but on the day there were 39 dogs. I was very pleased that Aurora was placed 2nd and will now compete in the semi finals being held at Discover Dogs in October.
At Leeds yet again we had a terrible ring. The grass was long causing many dogs to skip and jump and on a slope away from the judges table. Our judge was Cath Parker and her winners were DCC Thomson’s Glorfindel Shadow Boxer SHCM; Res DCC Large’s Edelweiss Mickey Mouse Is Madaza (Imp); BCC Curtis’ Verumamicus Aurora Of Brakemill JW; Res BCC Campbell’s Buckwheater’s Pictured Perfect.
Aurora was Best of Breed; Best Puppy was Large’s Parrima-arih Invaluable Fascination (Imp Rus) NAF; No veterans were present and Best Special Beginner was Evan’s Celticbridge Man Of War. Aurora went on to be shortlisted in the group by Mr David Shields.
Subject to KC confirmation this was the third and qualifying ticket for Shadow Boxer. He is 5 years old bred by The Late Gail Marshall and is out of Emoticon Kiaora Glorfindel (Imp) x Ch Bhuidh Sojourner Truth at Glorfindel. He won his 1st ticket at SKC (May) 2017 under Mrs Jenny Kendrick; the 2nd at Leeds 2017 under Mr Bob Cross and the 3rd at Leeds 2019.
I had been practicing very unsuccessfully with Baylie for the Bronze Good Citizen Award, but thought I would give it a go at Leeds. However on the day Baylie amazed me and did all she was asked to do. It then came down to me to answer the questions correctly. I am pleased to report that we passed.
It was lovely to see Arina and Dmitrijs Volkovs with 11 week old Leonid. Young Leo enjoyed lots of cuddles and was certainly taking an interest in all around him. Hopefully a junior handler in the making.
